Pressing Flowers

Since it's a rainy day outside I decided to bring the outdoors indoors and started the journey of pressing flowers. I pressed a couple a few weeks ago and was so happy to rediscover them in their new forms this morning. So pretty and delicate. So this time I grabbed all I could carry in one hand before the rain started up again. Since they were a little wet already I pressed them in between newspaper to help extract the water. Tomorrow I'll press them between wax paper and let the weight of Nylon and Jane Austen work their magic. I'm so excited to see how they turn out!

String State

I'm pretty proud of this DIY. I managed to do the entire thing without any headaches or mess ups! I made it for my friend, Sully, who moved across the state earlier this year after being my best bud since the fourth grade. I think it got the point across.

Craft Night

Last night I got to pause on the last minute homework and hang out with some fine ladies for a crafting night! We got cardboard letters and pretty acrylic paints from the Hobby Lobby and went to town. We couldn't help but listen to Christmas music on Pandora while we painted. It was so nice to take a break and get into the holiday groove.

Hurricanes and Crafting

There's something so exciting about shacking up, lighting candles and bracing yourself for the long day of rain and wind from a hurricane. Having candles on hand and figuring out ways to entertain yourself within the four walls of your home. I spent yesterday in Burgaw with Dylan's family and we played music, made yummy food, crafted, and got into the spirit of fall; it was so fun! You couldn't even see the kitchen table because it was covered with layers of fabrics, buttons, studs, beads, and more. Dylan's mom, Juliet, his sister, Maddie, and I made reusable coffee koozies while Dylan made us and his little brother, Ramone, and baby Penny a yummy cake. We made magical pumpkins and and Juliet made a cat tail for Maddie's Cat Woman costume. It was such a good day. Hurricane Sandy has been a success.

Weekend Recap

Oh boy, this weekend was so great. If I had all day, I'd share all of the great things I got to do and experience. In short, it was one of those weekends where you really feel alive and able to do anything. You realize that time is of the essence and the little things are what makes up a big adventure. Yeah, I haven't slept in my bed in three days, but who's really counting? Sure, my gas tank is empty, but what's it really matter? My heart is beating, my legs are working, and my world is defined only by spirit.

DIY: Infinity Scarf

Although Spring is well on it's way and quite a relief from the cold weather, it still has its chilly days! So, the best way to stay warm with style is definitely a scarf that you can just throw on when you're cold and throw off when it heats up. I love infinity scarfs, but I cannot believe how expensive they are, especially when I know how easy it is to make myself! It's so simple:

All you'll need is 60 inches of fabric, fabric scissors, measuring tape, pins, and a needle and thread.

Measure 60 inches long, and 9-12 inches wide from the fold. (Lengths/widths may vary according to your preference)

Cut the fabric straight down the edge, NOT along the fold.

Pin the edges together, and sew a 5/8" seam down the long side of the fabric.

Once you're finished sewing, your scarf should like like the picture above. 

Next, pull the scarf right side out, so that the seam is on the inside.

Now, this part may be confusing, but have faith! With the seam in the middle facing towards you, begin to turn the scarf inside out, but stop when the edges meet. Now the inside seam should be showing again. You want to line up the seam at the top holes so that the scarf doesn't twist.

Next, sew a 5/8" seam around the top, but leave 1-2 inches open, so that you can pull your scarf right-side-out.
Be sure to backstitch so the seam doesn't come out. Almost there!

Pull the scarf right-side-out through the hole. This may be frustrating if your hole is too small 

for the fabric to be pulled through. Don't pull too hard or you'll tear the fabric/seam.

Once you've pulled your scarf right-side-out, blind stitch the hole up with your needle and thread.

And you're done!

DIY: Fishtail Skirt!

Today's How-To: Fishtail Skirt

Why pay $10 extra for less fabric and more trend? Do it yourself! It's super easy:

-First, go shopping! Almost every thrift store I've ever been to has had long grandma skirts for cheaper than a cup of coffee. Pick out one that has a lot of movement and body. Then try on the skirt.

Next, figure out how short you want the front to be. Be sure to keep in mind about 1inch worth will be taken up when hemming.

Then, take off the skirt and fold the it back to front (as displayed) so that the front middle of your skirt is one point, and the back where the tag is, is the other point. 

Lay down the skirt so that the bottom is spread out.

Now cut a straight line about 13-15 inches in from the front point of your skirt.

Once you've cut your straight line, start to move your cut down the skirt in a diagonal line.

Now try your skirt back on to make sure your cut is straight in the front and tapers down how you want it to. You may find you need to round off the bottom a little or trim a piece here and there.

Once you've made your final cuts, simply hem the bottom so it doesn't fray and you're done!

Finally A Moments Time

Ah! It has been far too long since I last posted! I've just been so busy with a new semester at school, a very intensive job search, friends, family, and fitting sleep into all of that! We all have times like that, and I realized that my hair was struggling to keep up. Especially with the crazy weather we've been having here in Wilmington. So today I stopped and took a little me-time for some TLC for my locks of love:

All it took for this look was:
1.Two snake braids, pinned from the front of my part to the back of my head
2. Tightly braided the rest of my hair in the back
3. Wrapped it into a bun, pinned it, and voilà!
Safety from the wind and frizz in only 7-minutes!
